City Art Gallery

Housed in a stunning example of 1930s municipal architecture,
Southampton's City Art Gallery can offer something for everyone - young or old,
hardened culture vulture or first-time visitor.
The impressive art
collection spans six centuries of European art history and is internationally
renowned, with 3,500 exhibits. The earliest work is an Italian Renaissance
altarpiece by Allegretto Nuzi from the 14th century. The Gallery also owns the
Burne-Jones' Perseus Series, which is displayed in an exquisite wood-panelled
room, 17th century Dutch landscapes and French Impressionist paintings.
There is also a strong collection of 20th century British art, including
some fine pieces by the Camden Town Group, and paintings by highly reputed
artists like Sir Stanley Spencer, Matthew Smith and Philip Wilson Steer.
Displays and exhibitions change regularly during the year. For ceramics fans,
there is an outstanding collection of inter-war pottery and stoneware, while the
Gallery has also diversified into collections of photography and sculpture. And
for those interested in contemporary arts, the latest offerings include
installations and video works.
The Gallery shop is the place to buy
unique fashion jewellery by contemporary designers, ceramics and glassware as
well as the usual prints and postcards. If you're interested in learning about
fine art conservation, the Gallery offers a behind the scenes tour roughly every
3 month, where you can meet the conservation staff and see them at work (£5).
